From Book to TV #5: Green Arrow

I have this habit to watch any tv show/ movie based on book. So I'd like to introduce some of those tv shows/ movies!

I know, it's been ages since I last posted FBtT, but it's fall again, which means tons of new TV series!
And since few days ago started new series, Arrow, I decided to go with that.

Green Arrow is a fictional character, a superhero that appears in comic books published by DC Comics.
Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in November 1941.

His secret identity is Oliver Queen, billionaire and former mayor of fictional Star City. Dressed like Robin Hood, Green Arrow is an archer who invents trick arrows with various special functions, such as glue arrows, net, explosive, time bomb, grappling, fire extinguishing, flash and tear gas arrows, as well as cryonic arrows, and even a kryptonite arrow.

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific.

When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island.
While Oliver hides the truth about the man he's become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was.
Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance.

As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow - a vigilante to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory.
By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be - flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle - while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness.

However, Laurel's father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver's own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

So far there's only one episode out, but it was quite promising. There was a little too much noise and action and bad hairdos to my taste, but guess this has potential.

I especially drool over the fact Laurel's father is played by my favorite wizard, Paul Blackthorne!

What wizard, you may ask? He played Harry Dresden in The Dresden Files, based on Jimmy Butcher's books!

Unfortunately that only ran for one season, which made me sooo sad. But he's back, I can drool again!

Laurel Lance is played by Katie Cassidy.

The last time I saw her, she was in Gossip Girl (based on novel series by Cecily von Ziegesar) as Juliet Sharp, who was quite the b**tch!

That's why I have hard time liking her, but hopefully I'll get over that!

The main character, Oliver Queen, is played by Stephen Amell, who I can't say I'm familiar with.

I've seen him in The Vampire Diaries (based on the novel series by L. J. Smith), where he tortured Caroline and was killed by Stefan.
Not yet sure how I feel about him, we'll see!

This week I have to introduce two movies, since they're both based to the same story and coming out next year!

snow white and the huntsman

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman who was dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White's beauty and power.

The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

mirror mirror

A wicked enchantress schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan's throne and the attention of a charming prince. When Snow White's beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen orders her to be killed in the forest. Instead, Snow White is spared and escapes. Meeting up a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen.

Both of these movies are based on Snow White by Brothers Grimm. Gotta say, Brothers Grimm seem to be quite a hit at the moment!

I can't wait to see both of these! At first I was sure, that I will only be watching the Snow White and the Huntsman, because the trailer is just awesome and I love Alice in Wonderland! But after watching the trailer of Mirror, mirror, I realized, that even when they're based on the same story, these are two completely different movies. Other one has the action and adventure and the same beauty as Alice in Wonderland did. But the other one has fantasy and comedy put together, so of course I have to see it, too! Just can't wait!

harry potter

It's not everyday a movie series comes along that mixes magic, action, friendship, and ... Quidditch. The Harry Potter movies do all that and more, delighting fans of J.K. Rowling's books while also entertaining those new to the Potterverse. Like the books, the movies do get darker and more intense as the series progresses, so make sure your little Harry, Ron, and Hermione fans are ready for each new chapter before moving on.

I just watched Deathly Hallow part 1 and 2 yesterday. Then I realized, that there won't be more Harry Potter books or movies. And then I cried a little, since it's end of an era! The first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was released in 2001, ten years ago! Some of the movies could have been better, but I still have to buy them all. Just like the books.

I think I have to read the books again, so I won't feel so sad. After all, I read the first Harry Potter in 1998, when I was only 14 years old. So something important is over now. I think I'm little traumatized now.

This times serie is fairly new, too, since only two episodes has been aired.

once upon a time

From the inventive minds of Lost executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis comes a bold new imagining of the world, where fairy tales and the modern-day are about to collide.

And they all lived happily ever after – or so everyone was led to believe. Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. She’s a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who’s been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma’s help. He believes that Emma actually comes from an alternate world and is Snow White and Prince Charming’s missing daughter.
According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen’s curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever, frozen in time, and brought them into our modern world. Of course Emma doesn’t believe a word, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she finds herself drawn to this unusual boy and his strange New England town.
Concerned for Henry, she decides to stay for a while, but she soon suspects that Storybrooke is more than it seems. It’s a place where magic has been forgotten, but is still powerfully close… where fairytale characters are alive, even though they don’t remember who they once were.

The epic battle for the future of all worlds is beginning, but for good to win, Emma will have to accept her destiny and fight like hell.

This show is loosely based on our favorite stories. I just had to pick this, since there's only two episodes aired.

I really didn't know what expect since this show has the same executive producers as Lost did. And I didn't like Lost (*gasp* old ladies clutching their pearls). So far, I've enjoyed watching this show. I just wish there was less flashbacks and more present day, but hopefully the back story will be explained soon enough. I absolutely adore Robert Carlyle, just love him! Hopefully he's not a totally bad guy, as usually.

Again, it's hard to say anything more about the show, but so far, I've enjoyed it. And soon there will be episode three, yay!

I decided to pick a new show, only the first episode has been aired, which I just finished.

grimm

is a new drama series inspired by the classic Grimm's Fairy Tales.Portland homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli, "Turn The Beat Around") discovers he is descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as "Grimms," charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world.

As he tries to hide the dangers of his new found calling from his fiancé, Juliette Silverton, (Bitsie Tulloch, "quarterlife"), and his partner, Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby, "Lincoln Heights"), he becomes ever more entrenched in the ancient rivalries and alliances of the Grimm world.

With help from his confidant, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell, "Prison Break"), a reformed Grimm creature himself, Nick must navigate through the forces of a larger-than-life mythology, facing off with Hexenbiests, Blutbads and all manner of ancient evils, including royal lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, The Grimm Brothers. Reggie Lee ("Persons Unknown") and Sasha Roiz ("Caprica") also star.

As you can probably guess, this show is based on Grimms' Fairy Tales. As we all know, originally these fairytales aren't really the Disney- type, but gory and scary. I started to read these when I was age 8 or 9, and I had bad dreams for a long time. But I still had to read every story I could get my hands on.

I really enjoyed this first episode. It starts off with Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" playing on the background and I turned the volume up in my headset, so I could really enjoy the music.
Of course, I should've known that soon I would be scared shi.. I mean, speechless. Which is only suitable, knowing the original stories. This episode included parts of "Little Red Riding Hood" brought to modern life.
I liked when the main character met the first "Big Bad Wolf", and it turned out, that he actually wasn't so bad, thanks to diet, drugs and pilates! If there's any humor included, I'm usually fan right away! I'm easy that way.

Definitely will be watching the episode 2, "Bears Will Be Bears", which will be aired November 4th, less than a week to go!
